The FLI Difference

We Take A Broad Approach: Focus Leadership Institute is a multidisciplinary educational program that delves into psychology, sociology and family studies as well as leadership, social ethics, public policy, philosophy and theology. Our students come from diverse academic majors—from art education to finance to marketing to ministry. Course material is designed to strengthen student leaders from the inside out, regardless of their academic backgrounds or future leadership roles.

We Teach Students How to Think—Not What to Think: FLI’s academic experience is founded on the proposition that Truth is rooted in the nature and character of God and is both objective and discoverable. Therefore, discovery becomes our primary goal in the classroom. Our faculty members create a crucible of critical thinking, challenging students to question the assumptions that underlie their beliefs and actions. We walk with students as they build a coherent worldview that can be productively applied to the challenges of living in today’s world.

Learning Isn’t Confined to the Classroom: The FLI faculty is committed to the concept that Truth communicated in the classroom must be worked out in everyday life. A professional practicum assignment and opportunities for intentional reflection are important parts of the learning process.  The goal of our academic instruction is not that students subscribe unthinkingly to a set of beliefs, but that they find their lives being transformed by Truth. Therefore, our instructors also commit to sharing their lives with FLI students. As they model what they teach, their prayer is that their authentic pursuit of God is contagious.

Professors here challenge us to see the world through a different perspective. They do not want us to memorize the material and pass the test; they want to teach us to think. They implement a different style of teaching. They leave us with questions instead of answers, challenging us to find out the reasons why. This semester has been unlike any other semester of college I have attended.”
