Bruce Cooley, Summer 2008

I had to make a decision. For some reason, the financial argument was not enough to keep me away from attending the Focus Institute….I picked up the phone and made what was then one of the hardest phone calls I had ever made. I called and turned down all three of the internships I had been offered for the summer. It was a huge decision for me at the time. I not only turned down three very lucrative internships, but also I didn't even know if I had been accepted to the Focus Institute yet! But then it hit me: What I could have gained from any of those internships would have been trumped in the first few months of working in a full time position once I get out of college. However, at the Focus Institute, that experience would truly last for the rest of my life. It would change the way I thought about everything. Now, after going through the program, I just smile when I think about that story. God is so good and He is so faithful. The financial strain that I thought was going to be a problem has been settled with some scholarships that I didn't anticipate receiving. The best part is that so many standards were established in my life in just 8 short weeks. I now have a network of friends across the country that I know I can call if I really need something. I have a foundation of knowledge that is on my side for filtering the life I live. And best of all, I have one question that keeps teaching me new things though I am no longer in the classroom. What is the question? (Thanks goes to Dr. Del Tackett for this one!) "Do you really believe that what you believe is really real?" Well, do you?
